PUBLIC FUNDS FOR DOG PONDS?

The San Diego County Fish and Wildlife Commission (SDFWAC), has been voting for the last three years to direct funds to a consortium of hunting groups (San Diego Wildlife Federation-SDCWF). Every application has been approved and funded, so that to date more than $23,000 has been funneled toward the Dog Training Facility at Honey Springs Ranch. The site is part of the Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area, and controlled by the California Dept of Fish and Game (CDFG).

Navigating through the alphabet soup of these grants has been a challenge. No indication has ever been given that public funds were being used to create an artificial wetland environment on public land, for benefit of an exclusive and restricted group. Most of the public is not welcome to join SDCWF because " No clubs, organizations or people whose goals are not in accordance with SDCWF's beliefs and/or which have an anti-hunting bias will be accepted for membership." http://www.sdcwf.org/membership.html

During the last three years, Robert Smith, President of SDCWF, has requested a total of 6 grants. The amount awarded is nearly HALF of all monies the Commission has to oversee-- monies collected from fines levied by CDFG. According to the minutes of the Commission, SDCWF made its first request for fund in January of 2009... asking for $550 for "well restoration." In fact, at the January meeting the Commission voted to "amend" the grant award to $7,325. An increase of 1400% (if my math is correct).

In all the SDCWF went on to request and receive another five grants from the Commission, one for each of the funding periods from 2009 through July of 2011.

From the SDCFWAC website: "The ten-member advisory commission is appointed by the Board of Supervisors. ...The Commission disperses fine monies derived from violations of the State Fish and Game Code...

The Mission Statement of the Commission states:

The San Diego County Fish and Wildlife Advisory Commission serves the public by providing advice, funding and participation on issues and projects relevant to the prudent use, protection, and perpetuation of San Diego's wildlife.

Question: Is creating artificial wetland with millions of gallons of precious groundwater in a dry chaparral environment considered an "improvement" of habitat?

Throughout the last three years of rubber-stamp-funding of SDCWF, only once has a Commissioner (Suzanne Hall - Dist. 3) questioned the appropriateness of any of these awards (see minutes of July 2011). All other appointees have supported each award without exception.

Great turnout! At least 55 people attended the Tuesday night meeting of the Jamul-Dulzura Planning Group to discuss the current status of the Dog Training Ponds proposal for Honey Springs Ranch. Randy White (a JDPG member for some 22 years), drafted a letter to the Dept. of Fish and Game with a list of resident and Board concerns. Here is my quick summary of the issues raised in the letter. NO NOTIFICATION to residents, Rural Fire District, or Jamul-Dulzura Planning Group
GROUNDWATER needed to fill/maintain is projected at 3.3 million gal/year (10 acre-ft).
NOISE: The site is in a bowl-shaped valley with many nearby residences, horses, animals.
"REPAIRING ABANDONED STOCK PONDS": This portion buried deep in the document. Why?
RAINWATER: Original plan was to use only rainwater/runoff to fill the ponds. What happened?
HUNTING ACCIDENTS/SAFETY: Who will reimburse local fire department for emergency response?
POISONED TREES: 100-year old eucalyptus along access drive were reportedly poisoned. Why?
LOCATION IS IN FLOOD PLAIN. Implications?
WATER PUMP DISCREPANCY: 100-gal/min or 400 gal/min pump required? Document is unclear.
HERBICIDES: What impacts will pond "weed-control" have on groundwater?
ALTERNATIVE SITE: 19,000-plus acres that are in the DFG jurisdiction. An alternative site could be a win-win for everyone.

In addition to the above, the issue of using potable groundwater for non-drinking purposes was raised. This may be an illegal use under California Title 22.

A Committee was formed to address these issues with DFG, San Diego Wildlife [Hunting] Federation, Planning Group, and residents. The first meeting will be this Saturday (today!) at 11 AM at Brody's Burgers and Beer.

HONEY SPRINGS RANCH DOG TRAINING PONDS PROPOSAL

Supervisor Jacob held a meeting at her office Friday with Ed Pert, the Regional Manager for the California DFG, Rich Grunow, (Dept of Planning and Land Use), Jim Conrad & Bob Smith (Wildlife Fed), and Mike Casinelli & Randy White (Jamul/Dulzura Planning Group.)

Marcia Spurgeon, Glenn Revelle, and Pat Terry from Honey Springs Homeowners Assoc. also attended to discuss their concerns regarding the use of well water to fill the proposed "puppy ponds."

According to Pat, Ed Pert from DFG seemed willing to work with residents, and Supervisor Jacob stated that well water should NOT be an option! Further, the DFG admitted that they need more oversight and enforcement at Honey Springs Ranch area.

Ed Pert was made aware that neighbors are upset that no notification was given, and that a list of concerns has been drafted by the Jamul Planning Group.

Supervisor Jacob called for a followup meeting in three months. Said Terry, "We are hopeful of a positive outcome- and no need for lawsuits!"

SKYLINE FAMILY LOSES HOME TO FIRE - Local Support Drive Beginning

Yesterday morning a fire destroyed the Hooper's home off out Skyline Drive. Their neighbor and friend, Nick Baldwin, is starting a drive to help the family of three to get back on their feet.

I know victims of the 2007 fire will be able to share what items and kind of help are best. I plan to contribute cash or gift cards, since that can be used for anything. Kim (Hamilton) and Rob(Deason) have also volunteered their place (Deerhorn Valley Rd. and Elena Lane) as a drop-off area to make it more convenient.

We'll send out an Antler Alert/Update and post here as more details are worked out.

UPDATED: Last Tuesday evening, some forty local residents filled the meeting space of the Jamul-Dulzura Planning Group. Neighbors from Honey Springs, Deerhorn, Bratton Valley, and Sierra Cielo had one over-riding concern:

DOG POISONING IN UPPER DEERHORN...

Eowyn Smith from Wilde Oakes Farm near the top of Deerhorn Valley Road is warning neighbors and fellow DV'ers about a serious incident that took place last week:

Our farm dog was poisoned by antifreeze last week somewhere at the end of Deerhorn (she went missing for about 20 min to half hour). After showing signs of "drunken paralysis" we took her to the vet that eve. She underwent 36 hours of treatment and is now doing much better (it is best to catch this as soon as possible or your animals kidneys may be permanently destroyed). All should know that this is happening (I am not sure if you knew but several years ago there was a rash of similar dog poisonings in the area, killing at least 6 dogs at the end of Deerhorn).

Please contact the Sheriff if anyone has any further information. Let's prevent this from happening again!
NOTE: Remember that we have two Resident Sheriffs (Enrique and Dane) who are DV neighbors and here to

support us in keeping our community safe– including our dogs and livestock. Be sure to keep antifreeze and other chemicals secured.

Here in Deerhorn Flats (DV Rd at Elena) we had some gusty wind last night, but nothing more than 20MPH according to our weather station. We measured 0.12" of rain, and it's good to have another bit of soaking on the ground before the winds come our way.
CalFire reports that additional firefighters and equipment have been stationed at Jamul, as well as other areas in the county. The SDGE website shows the 24-hour wind forecast for Deerhorn (listed as "East Jamul" - Circuit 67) will stay in the "Moderate" range (under 35 mph), but Barrett, Potero, etc are expected to be "High."
It's on the chipper side; our thermometer reads 46 right now. But all is quiet. Stay safe, everyone!

PROPOSED DOG TRAINING "PONDS" NEAR HONEY SPRINGS RANCH HAVE POTENTIAL TO DEPLETE LOCAL GROUNDWATER

Neighbors on Honey Springs are worried. Private sporting groups plan to create "ponds" for dog training on public lands: Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area. The two ponds will require 2.4 million gallons of groundwater to fill, and an equal amount each year to maintain.

Long-time DV'ers remember the Honey Springs Development idea of 1979. When they tested the well at the ranch, the draw down was so great that nearby wells ran dry. Groundwater in our area is held in fractured rock, and pumping below existing wells has the potential to siphon away the water from uphill wells miles away.

POND ONE: (Already has a "Final" CEQA designation)

POND TWO:

420 ’x 100’ x 4-10’ deep

1.5 million gal. of water to fill

4,109 gal/day (123,287 gal/mo) to maintain

SOME HOMEOWNER CONCERNS:

The two wells together will require a staggering 2.4 million gallons of water to fill, and equal amount to maintain the water level each year.
Residents, who could potentially lose their wells, have received no notice of this proposal, no opportunity to be informed, and no chance to give input. Of more concern, there has apparently been no groundwater study.
This project was brought forward by private sporting clubs. If local wells fail, who will be accountable?

PowerLink Towers: Thank you to Peter P. Dyke for this photo taken from Mother Grundy/Upper Deerhorn. The reported height of the (9) towers in our area ranges from 150-200 feet.

A composite of SDG&E's maps of the project through our area is posted here: http://www.deerhornvalley.net/sunrisepowerlink.html The map had to be located among hundreds of maps in SDGE's report that were labeled only by code, not place names. This Southern route, originally determined to be unacceptable, was rushed through during the months following the Harris Fire. Deerhorn, Potrero, Dulzura residents were scattered, dealing with loss of their homes, insurance issues, FEMA, rebuilding and all the emotional trauma of the disaster. There was little time or energy to face the consequences of SDG&E's last-minute route change. (KH)

Rob and I measured 1.40 inches here on Elena Ln and Deerhorn Valley Rd. Weather Guru Bill Stevens got 1.71 in Upper Deerhorn. Mother Grundy station (http://weather.mothergrundy.org/) showed 1.07 inches. Any other reports? A very nice rain (although I can do without the winds!) Sure beats Red Flag Alerts! Julian has snow... and DPW says the roads are open. Not that I would brave those crowds for anything. But the pie IS good! -Kim

With the leadership of Sandra Ignosci, Deerhorn Valley volunteers took part in the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb last weekend on Sept. 3. Sandra had sponsored eight Rural Fire Fighters and our resident Sheriff in climbing 110 stories (the height of the Twin Towers) in honor of the first responders who lost their lives saving others ten years ago. Some climbed with full gear and apparatus to remember their final sacrifice. Thank you Sandra, for giving us a chance to be part of this memorial. Sandra's late husband, Daniel was a Fire Captain. Her brother, Randy, is a San Diego firefighter who was part of the Twin Towers search & rescue operation following 9-11. The flag in the background will fly today in New York City at Ground Zero.

The climb took place at the 30-story Hilton on San Diego Bay. Climbers scaled the inner stairs 4 times to complete the full 110 levels. This is the view from the 30th floor. Imagine 110 stories.

Blackout and The Hum Of Generators

Backcountry residents are probably in a better situation than most folks when the power goes off. Generators growled and the lights flickered throughout the hills and valleys last night. Neighbors checked on neighbors, shared meals, swapped phones, and listened for the latest news on the region-wide power outage.
Rob and I found ourselves stranded in Rancho San Diego where we'd made the trip down to gas up the car and do the food shopping. [NOTE: gas pumps don't work without power.]
Albertson's and the smaller had stores all closed their doors, and most cellphones were offline. The ATT Store was locked, and the folks standing around inside weren't even interested in turning around at my knock on the door. I headed over toward Staples and spotted a woman talking on her cell in the parking lot. A wonderful lady I only know as "Daisy" rolled down the window and offered to make a call for us to our neighbor. Surprisingly the call went through, and Sandra Ignosci jumped in her car, retrieved a can of gas from our place, then drove it 20 miles down the hill. Thanks to everyone who responded with information about all the planes over Deerhorn and Mother Grundy today. I sent an Antler Alert, and hopefully put some folks at ease (I felt better, anyway!) The planes were flying toward Barrett Lake, and one sharp resident mentioned they all had pontoons.

Battalion Chief John Kremensky said the planes were equipped with super scoops and filling up out of Barrett Lake for the Ridge Fire (near Buckman Springs and Hwy 8). Ridge Fire is under USFS jurisdiction, and the incident website is here:

"A lightning storm in the afternoon of August 28 ignited a fire in the Buckman Springs area of the Descanso Ranger District in the south end of the Cleveland National Forest. The fire is 25 miles east of San Diego.The Ridge Fire is 120 acres and 40% contained. The fire is burning in 40-year-old chaparral with a high dead component. No road closures or evacuations are in effect, no structures are threatened.One firefighter was treated for a minor heat-related injury."

Cal-Fire is being assisted U.S. Forest Service, and San Diego.

The large plume of smoke to the east is NOT the control burn advised by SD CalFire. I was transferred to the SD Fire Authority by the 9-11 operator. They told me that the the plume was from a "very large fire" burning in Mexico approximately 7 miles south of the border. The smoke is clearly visible from the East Camera atop Lyons Peak. SO HOW WAS YOUR (MONGOL) WEEKEND?

With all the law enforcement stationed along SR 94 and Lyons Valley Rd, it may not be surprising that locals have apparently been pulled over more frequently for speeding or other infractions:
One caller received a speeding ticket for exceeding the 55 mph limit going down the Skyline Truck Trail downgrade. She was applying brakes and had two cars in front of her. She was cited for 65 mph.
A second driver reported being pulled over on 94 Saturday night while returning from his work at a nearby restaurant. He was informed there was no light on his rear license plate. Upon inspection it was simply dimmed by its cover of road dust (this IS Jamul), and he was not cited.
A local grandmother (toddlers in the car) approached the intersection at Hwy 94 from Lyons Valley Rd. She was startled to see numerous (~15) police officers out of their cars on both sides of the road, including two with guns drawn. When she hesitated going through what appeared to be a dangerous situation one officer motioned her to move through in the middle of the road so she could turn west onto 94. She seemed quite shaken by the incident.
It appears many Jamul residents were caught off guard by the Mongols arrival, along with the heavy police presence in Jamul. Here are some of the questions I've been asked (and have no answers for at this point):

Why was so little notice given to residents before police began taking up their positions along 94 and Skyline. We were concerned and worried. (The only news sources I was aware of that circulated information were Ch 8 or 10 News.)

Why did Diamond Jack's, a rural RV park, permit a Mongol Motorcycle Club Rally in our community? (A good question for the management/owners. A check of reviews by various camping websites shows 35 available RV sites, pool, and other amenities. Reviews are mostly positive: peaceful.. quiet.. clean.. friendly.. etc. Was they even aware of what was coming?

How much has this police response cost-- and from whose budget? (Chula Vista, El Cajon, La Mesa, County, Vista, ?)

To what extent did our local businesses benefit... or did they? (We avoided going into Jamul for dinner with overnight guests, opting instead for Eastlake.)

Is this something we should expect again next year?

MONGOL INVASION...

We were perplexed driving up the hill from Rancho San Diego yesterday. At every intersection or open driveway along Hwy 94 there was a parked black-and-white police unit: SD Sheriffs, Vista, El Cajon, La Mesa, Chula Vista... Multiple units were even covering Four Corners intersection of Honey Springs an Lyons Valley Rd. All sorts of things ran through my mind: Drill? Terrorism? Manhunt? When the phone started ringing and others were asking ME what was happening, I sent out the first Antler Alert with the question. Within minutes came the answer from those who'd been paying closer attention to local news: The Mongols were coming... and nearly 300 were already here.

Marcia Spurgeon gave the details:

The sheriff and Police presence started early this morning. There are units
from San Diego, La Mesa, El Cajon, Vista, Oceanside. The units are all manned
with two officers. There are also multiple undercover units. They are positioned
from the corner of Jamacha & 94 all the way past the post office and up Lyons
Valley and Skyline. Mostly parked in driveways.
They are in Jamul because a motorcycle gang, the Mongols are camping out at
Diamond Jack's and maybe Skyline Ranch Campground. A sheriff went and
talked with Nadine Bennett at the school district office at about 4pm. Apparently,
the Monguls are in the Hell's Angels territory. The sheriff said they would be here
all weekend, monitoring the gang, until they leave Jamul. I was told there was
about 300 bikes altogether going up Lyons Valley road. –Marcia Spurgeon

In 2002 three people were killed and more than a dozen were injured in a brawl between Hells Angels and Mongols at Harrah's Laughlin casino.

DEERHORN FIRE STATION OPEN HOUSE & REUNION

The Community Reunion & Fire Station Open House held on June 26th was a great community event. Tables of neighbors, old and new, lined the bay (I counted some 40 parked cars, so estimating the turnout at around 80!) There was a lot of "Oh my gosh... look who's here!" and plenty of waves to friends across the tables. Rob and I had to leave early (grandkids arriving), but Sharon Rich... long time Deerhorn resident... gives us a sense of what it was to be there:

We went to the Deerhorn Fire Dept. meeting June 26th 2011. There was a greeting table and we were all given raffle tickets. The volunteer firefighters stood tall and proud in the background. One of the purposes of the meeting was the vote for the committee. The speakers filled us in from past to present and giving the direction of the future and included a slide show of many of those in the community who have helped along the way these years.
We were served a delicious 5 star lunch and dessert.
I would like to say to all taking part that it was a fine community effort, and those there were proud to be part of the Deerhorn community. We thank those taking part and making it happen.
Speaking for those of us who were shy of information I would have liked to have been introduced to those seeking election as part of the meeting. Importantly...a 'sort of' roll call of the volunteer firemen would have been nice. Yes, we were given a chance to applaud them. –Sharon Rich

Marcia Spurgeon was the Mistress of Ceremony, and Paul and Dianne Jacob were there and honored for their donation of land. It was a real salute to the community folks of Deerhorn Valley (1975-1993) who raised more than $40,000 to construct the fire station and then passed a Benefit Fee to make sure it would be maintained. A plaque now rests at the foot of the flagpole, on a large native rock that Paul Jacob managed to haul over with his tractor!

The Annual Election of CSZ Board Members was also held. It says something about the vitality and spirit of a community when there were actually more candidates than there were seats! Congratulations to our newly-elected CSZ Board Members, and those continuing their service to the community:

Kudos and thanks to Batallion Chief John Kremensky and all our firefighters who "stood proud." Chief K collected numerous photographs of fundraising and community events from 1975 on and created a slide show with them. There were a lot of moist eyes watching the efforts of so many to create a community center and fire station. And no... we didn't even ask what was in those cups everyone was holding!

CSZ BOARD ELECTIONS

Join with your backcountry neighbors and celebrate our local firefighters in their newly remodeled station.
36 years ago the Deerhorn Valley Volunteer Fire Dept. and its Ladies Auxiliary began. There was no fire station or equipment, just a lot of good folks who were willing to serve their neighbors and community. The only equipment was an old triple action pumper, and Emily and Floyd Bennett volunteered their garage for its home for the next four years. Then it moved (temporarily) to Paul and Dianne Jacob's old brown barn off of Honey Springs Rd. and DV residents donated enough money to by an attack pumper to keep it company.
In 1987 the Jacobs stepped forward and donated a plot of land for a permanent fire station/community center. The era of DV potlucks, pancake breakfasts, swap meets and chicken-plop contests began! Along with everyone's waistline, the pot of money grew. $40,000 was raised, and then DV did something that stands in the record books to this day:
The DVVFD Board placed a proposition on the November 1990 ballot to pay off the remaining debt and provide ongoing support for the Volunteers: The results were stunning – over 80% of Deerhorn Valley’s registered voters turned out to vote, AND 76% supported the proposition in the highest voter turn-out ever in a San Diego Special Election!

To all our past/present firefighters and their families: we honor and support your selfless giving of time and effort to bring about a safer and more vibrant community.

CalFire San Diego is advising there will be a 40-acre control burn near their Cuyamaca Station today and tomorrow. Dense fuel may put up quite a large smoke. No worries. Oops... that is a thoughtless remark, as one neighbor just reminded me: "...a so called controlled backfire took my home in 07. Still living in a trailer. sorry just venting. I think its too windy. Thank you for all your updates." Thanks for that. No time to drop the vigilance.

Sunday I joined a group of neighbors who had stepped up to our FireSafe Council's call for volunteers. Task: create some defensible space around the home of an elderly couple up on Mother Grundy who needed some helping hands.
Nine volunteers arrived. All had their own weeds to whack at home, but found a couple of spare hours to help out a neighbor. That is the kind of spirit that makes Deerhorn Valley so special!
By 8:00 am Tom Lamb had the FireSafe Council's trailer in place with all tools needed: weedwhackers, pruners, saws, and even a rolling chipper. Gloves, helmets, ear and eye protection were set out, and the first volunteers arrived.
Like an old-fashioned barn raising, helping hands made the work so much easier. Sandwiches, cold cuts, potato salad, chips and cheese were laid out at lunch time. Clean porta-potties were set up, and unlimited chilled water and juices filled the coolers. Friends were made, stories shared, and most of the volunteers stayed through the afternoon. It just felt that good to be working together!
This was a 100% volunteer effort, and the first of it's kind here in Deerhorn. Nobody else is going to do this work for us... so we'll get her done in true community fashion!
Have a couple of weekend hours to lend? You'll meet new friends, help a deserving neighbor out, and have that feel-good glow knowing what you did made a difference.

LOST DOG FOUND...

Jill Powell's special companion, Fender, went missing yesterday. Before we could even get out a notice, good neighbors (what other kind do we have?!) had gone to the rescue:

Found my dog. So very grateful for a kind neighbor! I held a rattlesnake avoidance class this morning at our place. Funny how Fender conveniently went missing and I located him shortly after it was over. The other two dogs failed to get out of the class….
Fender [was] found on Honey Springs at Mother Grundy by a woman sitting on her patio. She had not seen me with my horse trailer but saw Fender and said it was clear he was chasing after something. So she kenneled him and hung a sign on the board there. She had called Animal Control but was going to wait till Monday and take him in to be scanned for microchip. Her son [wanted] him... and when I went to get him I was greeted by 3 other dogs. Seems he might not have missed me much! AWESOME NEIGHBORS WE HAVE OUT HERE! -Jill Powell

SUNDAY AFTERNOON RIDE ENDS IN TRAGEDY FOR MOTORCYCLIST

Saturday afternoon a motorcyclist lost his life on Otay Lakes Rd, just west Thousand Trails Campground when he collided head-on with a Ford-150 pickup truck. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and two occupants in the truck were transported to the hospital. Otay Lakes Rd. remained closed for fatality investigation until approximately 9:00 pm.
One of our Deerhorn neighbors was first on the scene and called 9-11. I got this from her this morning, and it serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly events can change not only our lives, but those of our family, friends, and neighbors:

Unfortunately, we were there. We had the kids and were headed to a party when it happened just seconds before us. We made the first call to 9-1-1. I got out to attempt rescue breathing. But he was already dead from the head-on impact. So very, very sad. His friend was just sobbing, and sobbing over his body. Young men out for a fun weekend ride. I have no idea how it turned around to such a horrific end.

Our condolences to all those affected, and a hope that we all take it a bit slower on the twists and winds of our backcountry roads.

Memorial Day Moment Of Remembrance: 3:00pm Today

Their remarks were all associated with barbecues and extended weekend parties and celebration, and they had little idea about the sacrifices of the soldiers in whose honor it is celebrated. To help young people understand the real meaning of Memorial Day, the National Moment of Remembrance was established by Congress. It takes place at 3pm local time no matter what time zone. We ask that you pause for a moment or two to recognize all of our military service members and their families.

BEE SWARMS...

Beautiful hanging swarm... there are probably about 50,000 bees in this cluster

This is bee-swarm season. The cool days keep bees inside their hives, clustering to keep their larva and queen warm. The first warm days after a cold or wet-spell bring many swarms. Swarms are the natural way bees increase their numbers; they will create a new queen which either kills the old one or takes off in search of a new home.

Swarming bees will rest by clumping together in a tree or under eaves. If they are reachable, these swarms are a delight to capture for most beekeepers. Typically they'll hang around for 2-3 days while their scouts are searching out new digs, then take off. But if they decide your wall or roof or is the PERFECT place to set up their household, they will be much more difficult to remove.

Swarms may rest under eaves. If not too high, these swarms are not usually difficult to capture.

If you have a reachable, hanging oval of bees (see pics) you have a couple of options:
San Diego Beekeeping Society: They post a list of beekeepers wanting swarms. Warning: in swarm season beekeepers are swamped with requests, and a lot of us just run out of equipment (boxes) or space for hives.
CraigsList: Enter the word "bees" in the search box. You'll see a lot of requests for swarms and offers for bee removal. Some local beekeepers will come for free, some will have a basic charge for time and gas (usually around $50).
If your bees are in a wall or roof, call the beekeeper and/or send pictures to the beekeeper, who will know if it's possible to remove them. A last resort is to call an exterminator. If the hive has been there for a long time (years), it could be quite large with a lot of comb to remove ... in other words, expensive.

They can rest on fences or posts too. Swarms will usually leave for a permanent home in a couple of days.

FACTS

Bees are responsible for every third bite of food you eay: fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc.
Colony Collapse Disorder, a mysterious syndrome where bees abandon their hives, has eliminated some 40% of American bees for EACH of the last 4 years. This is a major area of concern for countries around the world as they look at future food supplies. CCD has driven many commercial beekeepers out of business, and the price of renting hives for crop pollination is now around $350 each (at least one hive per acre is required)
Deerhorn's bee population was wiped out by the Harris Fire, so swarms are finding no competition and coming back in large numbers.
About 80% of wild hives have been "Africanized" to some extent, however the aggressive traits of bees seem to be diluting as they interbreed with domesticated bees kept by beekeepers

WET ROADS... SLOW DOWN ... WATCH FOR LOOSE COWS!

1:00 PM: CHP is responding to reports of a loose cow on Japatul Valley Rd and Lyons Valley Rd.

10:30 AM: ADULT & CHILD INJURED IN SECOND CRASH ON SR-94 DULZURA: About 10:30 AM on SR-94 just east of the Dulzura Post Office, another car skidded off the pavement and into a ditch. SR-94 was closed again as one adult and one child were transported to hospitals.

7:00 AM SR-94 CLOSURE@ DULZURA UPDATE: We sent out an Antler Alert this morning after learning eastbound SR 94 was closed just west of Dulzura due to a head-on crash. SignOnSanDiego now reports a Border Patrol agent lost control of his patrol car on the wet pavement and swerved into oncoming traffic about 6:30 a.m. and struck a westbound Nissan Altima. The driver of the Nissan suffered major injuries, and the Border Patrol agent minor ones. LifeFlight was called but could not respond due to the weather conditions. Both drivers were transported to a hospital by ambulance.SR 94 was closed at Honey Springs Rd. for more than two hours.

ANTLER ALERT: Two More Dog-Kills on Elena Lane

Three months ago the Hill Family on Elena Lane lost one of their two goats to a daytime attack by two dogs.

This week they found the body of their remaining pet goat, Mollie, and that of their new baby kid, Petunia, inside their fenced run. Their throats had been mauled and the goats bled to death. There was no foraging or feeding– definitely pointing to a dog attack, (not coyote or mountain lion). Our sympathies to the Hill Family and their grandchildren who had become so attached to Mollie and Petunia.
These attacker(s) are not feral or abandoned dogs killing for hunger. They are most likely well-fed pets who have taken to sport-killing. Experts and livestock owners agree: dogs are predatory animals and will not stop killing once they have begun. Dogs will also tend to return to the same areas where they have killed before. There is also a growing danger that dogs will attach other prey.

In 1989, Roy Johnston of Dulzura was attacked and killed in a dog attack. His body was found by an off-duty policeman who shot and killed one of the dogs circling Johnson's body. Criminal charges were sought against the owner.

In 1991, a 69-year-old ranch hand was fatally mauled by roaming dogs on in Dulzura while walking along a trail near the dog-owners' property. The owner was later found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and did some serious jail time. DV'er Frank Braunlich remembers the attack and reminds us, "scares me when I think of some small children walking home from the school bus stop. You just cannot be too careful or trusting of animals in a pack, no matter what your size. I don't want to alarm anyone, but this should be publicized to parents and dog owners as well."
Mark Payne also says, “It is legal to shoot dogs attacking your livestock.” He is absolutely correct, just make sure you have as much hard evidence as possible. If the dog’s owner claims mistaken identity or blames other dogs for encouraging it, you may have to defend your actions in court.

A motor home towing a jeep on a trailer and trailer struck a power pole about 1:00 PM on the grade just east of the entrance to the USFWS across from the Daley Ranch. Both vehicles caught fire, and HW 94 was shut down in both directions. The power pole fell over and live wires lay across the road. SDG&E responded and was still involved in cleanup at 7 PM, although one lane of the road was open At lease one person was injured and transported to a hospital, and two dogs were also taken into protective custody. The motor home was a total loss, as was the Jeep Liberty that was being towed. There was no report on the injured parties.

Later two separate car crashes near Barrett Lake Rd. and HWY 94 also shut down traffic for a time.

Be careful out there! Doesn't it make you wonder how we'd do in an emergency evacuation situation?

Last [Thursday] night approximately 19:20, Station 37 Deerhorn valley and surrounding stations were dispatched to an "oven fire" on Bratton Valley Rd. When Deerhorn Fire engine 7317 arrived on scene, they reported a 2 story residential structure with smoke and fire showing from the 1st floor of the structure. Within 4 minutes crews were making entry and approximately 3 minutes later the fire was knocked down in the first floor kitchen and crews were moving to the second floor to check for extension and to start ventilation.
When Battalion Chief Mike White arrived at scene, personnel were actively engaged in searching for extension, ventilating the second floor, and salvaging content in the first floor kitchen and living space.
Damage was limited to the area around a built in oven and cabinets where the fire had started. Damage was less than $20,000 due in large measure to the fast actions of the SDR/SDCFA stipend firefighters who arrived in the first 6 minutes of the incident.
These 2 firefighters did any outstanding job of limiting fire spread and preventing a very large dollar loss incident... Driver operator Derrick LaFreniere, and Firefighter Zach Damon.

I thought you would be encouraged to know that San Diego Rural Fire Protection District, San Diego County Fire Authority and CAL FIRE enhanced Fire Protection program had a very successful night!

What a difference a day makes! A late winter storm system puttered through San Diego County leaving rain and snow flurries behind. Our local wildflowers (these are miniature lupine) received an unexpected dusting on Friday night.

BEE SWARMS...

The football-type clumps are easiest to remove for beekeepers... the lower to the ground, the better!

Spring is here, and Sven Merten (Mother Grundy) is looking for new bee swarms–

"I cannot remove an existing hive for you, only a swarm. Swarms will show up usually clustered on a low branch or anything sheltered really as they pause to rest in their search for a new hive site. I will come get your swarm/cluster of bees for free. I want to start a new hive, so the bees will not be killed. I will transfer them to a hive in my orchard where they will happily live out their natural lives. I can only go to Jamul and the surrounding areas. I am usually available anytime, just give me a call at 760-468-2296 Leave a message if I don't answer and I will get back to you promptly."

Last year all of San Diego County experienced a record number of swarms. Here in our valleys, the bees returned after two years of absence after the Harris Fire. Before you call an exterminator, check with Sven or other beekeepers on Craigslist who will usually come and collect the swarm for little or no cost.

Bees will often swarm right onto the trunks of our oaks.

We just received this from a neighbor who lives near the Lyons Valley Trading Post. If you have experienced anything similar or have knowledge of a similar situation, please file a report with the Sheriff's Department. Call 911 or Non-emergency dispatch: (858) 565-5200

A guy in a yellow truck passed today as I was walking (I’ve seen the truck before on my walks). A couple minutes later I saw him coming back toward me. I thought, He must have forgotten something at home. Then he stopped his truck as if he wanted to ask for directions. He asked, “What color panties are you wearing?” Thinking I was hearing wrong, I asked, “Excuse me?” And he asked again, “What color panties are you wearing?” I replied, “Who the hell ARE you??!” I walked away and he took off.
I failed to get his license plate info. He is young, probably in his late 20’s. Light brown hair, cut short, wavy in the front. Fair skin. Clean shaven. His truck was a newer model Nissan (I think) pickup, bright yellow.
At the Trading Post, I told Francisco about it. He said he saw the truck speeding by, as it usually does. He’s seen [the pickup] before many times. Hence, this guy may live in the valley or visits someone who does.
Please be careful if you walk Lyons Valley [and other nearby areas]. Tell your friends and family. What he did to me merely freaked me out. But we don’t know what someone like this is capable of, given the opportunity.

UPDATE: A report has been filed with the Sheriffs' Office. The incident number is: S9070881.

RESPONSES:

Some advice from retired law enforcement. DO NOT confront this person. Try to memorize his appearance and get the license number of the car. Then call the SDSO. Several reasons come to mind, the least being; if he is armed your may get dead, if you get close enough he may grab you and I hear Mexico is rainy during this time of the year so you probably wouldn't like the trip or what happens to you if he gets you in his vehicle. Weather Guru Bill Stevens recorded 1.70" of rain up on The Spices from Monday's storm, and nearly another half-inch last night (Wednesday). It looks like another incredible spring: lots of wildflowers (and weeds).
Bee Swarms: We got the first call of the year about bee swarms from a resident in Lakeside. The swarm had collected in her bamboo and after three days was still there. Generally swarms are docile, and will often move on after a couple of days. If they are fairly-easy-to-reach, many beekeepers will come and get them free of charge. Check Craig'sList
The DVCA Steering Committee met Tuesday night and set plans in motion for a Self-Guided Roadside Wildflower Tour. Numbered markers along Honey Springs and DV Roads will be keyed to a guide available online and posted at the Welcome to DV Sign. A work session to make signs is set for next Tuesday at Rob & Kim's. Stay tuned.
The Spring Antler is due out on May 1st, this time USPS mail. We know folks appreciate getting a hard copy in their mailboxes, but unfortunately the $400 for printing/mailing means we can just do it once yearly. Past Antlers are always available online, though. A GOOD REMINDER TO US ALL TO SLOW DOWN AND BE EXTRA ALERT:
Lorna Odegaard was driving to work on Honey Springs about 7:40 this morning. As she slowly headed up the HS grade toward 4-Corners water was streaming down the hillsides flooding the roadway. Suddenly the wet became slushy and icy. Lorna "noticed a set of car tracks going off into the ditch and looked over and a car was over the edge on its roof. I made a U-turn at 4-corners and headed back up...the person was blowing on the horn so I sounded my horn and said I would go for help."
She flagged down a Border Patrol unit and then headed to the firestation for help. When she returned, the Border Patrol agent said the lady was alive.
"In all my years living up here since 1980, I have seen it snow many times, but this was entirely different. There was no hail or snow until I hit the bottom and slightly up Skyline."
Thank you so much, Lorna, for having the presence of mind to check on those car tracks and make sure help arrived. Our thoughts are with the driver and her loved ones.

THREE SISTERS... SHARING THEIR DEERHORN ROOTS

Merry Lynn (McLaren), Kathie (Collins), and Susie (Norton) revisit the original 1896 homestead of great-grandfather, John Edgar Roberts. Tecate Peak is in the background.

Three very special women, sisters with Deerhorn roots, spent this week together--- in the place where they spent so much of their childhoods. Susie (Walker) Norton is a permanent resident and community supporter. Merry Lynn and Kathie visit the old family ranch house as often as possible. Together they created a whirlwind of wonderful memories and stories; Rob and I were so privileged to be included. We recorded several hours of reminiscing and shared a day trip through part of the original homesteaded land. We'll be featuring their stories and memories in our upcoming Spring Antler, and in the historical pages planned for DeerhornValley.net.

The Sisters called this rockytop at the bottom of DV Rd. "Eagles' Peak." Charlie Bratton's old cabin and the Deerhorn Schoolhouse once stood at the bottom. Children who attended the school said at times they heard the mountain moan.

These pinnacle rocks along DV Rd. were called The Sugar Loaves. In earlier times sugar was sold in large cones (loaves) that could be scraped into granules for cooking.

Disclaimer: I have absolutely no background in meteorology, but I've lived in Deerhorn for 28 years, and those are my grandkids, and they like snow! That has to count for something! So here I go ...
KIM'S PREDICTION: Snow will begin falling throughout our valleys late this afternoon. It will be mixed with rain, and probably melt as soon as it hits the ground. After a while you'll begin to notice that some of the flakes are clumping together where it's drier: tree notches, fences, rooftops. Later (my quartz ball says around 7 pm) the temperature will drop to the low 30's. Poke your head outside and you'll find what falls will be mostly snow. Throughout the night be prepared for the kids to get up just to check. By early morning we'll have at least sprinkling of snow... up to a couple of inches. Enough to bite the hands through our wimpy gloves. A few brave souls will scoop some into a mini snowman. And if there's no snow at your altitude, go visit some friends that live a bit higher! Are you ready for visitors Ruth, Phyllis, Ariele and Dr. Ruth?
That's the Kim Prediction, and it's definitely worth the ~~paper~~ electrons it's printed on!

9:00 AM Water was crossing the road at the Daley Ranch Dip. Unaware drivers were not slowing down. Be aware of drivers approaching from the opposite direction. The water is deep enough to cause hydroplaning and loss of control. If you do cross running water, do it SLOWLY. It is always deeper than you think. If there is any doubt... DON'T CROSS.
DPW is now reporting 6" of snow on Mt. Laguna and 2" in Julian. Crews are plowing, and drivers are advised to stay off roads if at all possible. Palomar Mtn already has snow at 4,000" Flooding throughout county.
More than 1 inch of rain has fallen in Deerhorn. As of 9:00 AM Honey Springs Road was still clear at the dips.

FLOOD ADVISORY: EXTENDED UNTIL 10:15AM

Just checked the NWS for our area. A flood advisory has been added to all the other warnings, so be exceptionally careful if you have to go down the hill. Three flood spot to watch out for: Creek crossing at the bottom of Deerhorn Valley Road -- Honey Springs Road both above and below entrance to Lower Mother Grundy TT

These three spots can become impassible. Most long-time residents have seen trapped cars. Deerhorn dip usually clears most quickly, but a lot of sand, mud and debris will be under the water level. The two dips on Honey Springs are treacherous: fast-moving and deceptively deep. Don't expect warning signs to go up. The DPW will have its hands full in the lower areas. Skyline TT is the best route. It will also take you around a major flood spot on Hwy 94. I haven't hear anything about Otay Lakes Rd. It typically floods at the Thousand Trails dip and the creek crossing just east of the gliderport.

Be warm. Stay safe. Hoping you don't have to get on the road.

Some suggestions for the weekend storm. We haven't had a power outage in so long, that I almost forgot to dig out the flashlights and batteries!

Gas for car/generator
Food—nonperishable, easy-to-prepare (we use our woodstove for backup cooking -- steaks and foil-wrapped potatoes cooked over the coals. Mulled cider and wine stay warm on top.
Flashlight & extra batteries
Cell phone - keep it charged
Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)
First aid kit
Multi-purpose tool
Keep family and emergency contact information handy
Bring pets inside - livestock should be protected
Ample alternate heating methods: fireplaces or wood-stove
Bookmark emergency sites on your computer.

Couple of past experiences: In the 1980's we had a serious freeze with several nights of temps down into the teens and low 20's. Our outdoor water lines froze and ruptured. We didn't know a tiny trickle of water prevents that from happening. Around the same time there was a snowfall that stranded cars without chains at the bottom of Honey Springs Road. The weather reports say it's not likely we'll get much accumulation, but even the 2008 Valentine's Day snow made driving up Deerhorn Valley Road impossible once the snow started sticking.

BEWARE OF MEAT DELIVERY SCAM

This week a Lyons Valley neighbor was approached by a large white truck selling meat, and warns that this may be a scam that has been seen in many states. The delivery people claimed that a neighbor had cancelled the order, and they would give her a great deal to avoid having to take it back to the warehouse. She was victimized and is trying to get her money back, but wants to warn others: BE WARY IF APPROACHED TO BUY MEAT OFFERED TO YOU AT YOUR HOME. It may be stolen, substandard, or stored in unsanitary conditions. If you have had any experience with meat arriving unannounced at your door, she would like to connect with you and share the legal codes to challenge the order and get your money back. She says, "I'm utterly sickened that people like this are exploiting our --or any-- community. They have no scruples and rely on our shame to keep us quiet." Well said. We all need to look out after one another.

Try Googling "Meat Home Delivery Scams" This incident has all the markers.
UPDATE: Several people have let us know that they were victimized in a similar way by home-delivery meat "businesses." 100 pounds at $4/lb turned out to be just 100 "pieces" at the same cost... more than doubling the cost. The claim is usually that the customer "misheard." Others reported that the meat was inconsistent, some not edible, other pieces of good quality. The scam went unreported because (true for most who are victimized) people felt embarassed that they had fallen for such a ruse. Stay tuned.

SNOW PREDICTION: Enjoy–– But Be Prepared

This next weather storm is predicted to be VERY cold, with snow levels as low as 1000 feet over the weekend--- probably Saturday and Saturday night. The National Weather Service is warning that with snow levels so low "this weather could be deadly for unprepared hikers or campers."
Stay updated on the coming weather as you plan your weekend. Over the years we have seen snow that prevented us from coming up Deerhorn Valley Road without chains. (And who carries chains in Deerhorn?!) Mother Grundy and other unpaved roads could be treacherous until the snow melts (to mud).
We're gonna lay in some extra firewood, and do the have-to chores today and tomorrow.
Stay prepared. A beautiful Deerhorn snowfall is a very special time.

Saturday Morning: Just got a call from Bill Stevens, our local Deerhorn weather tracker. He recorded 3.45" of rain over the last 24 hours in Upper Deerhorn. More showers are predicted through tomorrow (Sunday), then a sunny Monday for those of you with the day off (Washington's Birthday). We're still under Flash Flood Watch until late tonight, as runoff and local flooding is possible this afternoon behind the departing cold front. Hope you can spend most of the time inside, dry and warm.

The Dust Has Settled... We Hope.

It seems the dust has settled. Power and phone were restored yesterday to neighbors Upper Mother Grundy. Mr. Fletcher has agreed to repair the road damage and properly treat the trees that were limbed. The home owners have their modules delivered, and are looking forward, I'm sure, to establishing real roots in a real home. I hope they realize no one in Deerhorn Valley has any bad feelings toward them at all. It was solely Mr. Fletcher's behavior that escalated this incident far beyond what it should have been. How different we would all feel if the road had been prepared ahead of time, homeowners had been notified, proper lodging had been arranged for the couple without power, and an agreement for repairing the damage done had been forthcoming from the start.

We owe thanks to Supervisor Jacob, the Planning Dept. (DPLU) and the Dept. Public Works (Roads) who sorted out the pieces and informed us what options there were for repairing the damage, and what kind of information was available to assist us (Trucking Permits, load limits, etc.) We'll obtain copies of the trucking regulations that apply on county roads and private easements, and request copies of the approved permits. Stay tuned. I admit my eyes glaze over at those kinds of documents.

In the meantime, if you suffered any damage to your trees, road surface (including drainage patterns), let us know and we'll forward the information to DPLU and DPW.

You Owe Us an Apology, Mr. Fletcher

"I can cut any tree that I want..." - Jacob Fletcher

On Friday and Monday, Fletcher Construction Co. attempted to haul three 90-foot-long oversized trailer modules up a steep, winding 2-lane road that is Deerhorn Valley’s only safe access route for evacuation and medical assistance. This was beyond stupidity; it was callous disregard for the lives and safety of the families who live here.

I can’t begin to understand why proper protocol and safety were not considered. Other companies have placed similar modules in the same location with little or no problem. Other companies have surveyed and prepared the road ahead of time. Evidently that was too much to ask of GJ Fletcher Construction Co.

When I asked Jacob Fletcher why there had been no road preparation, he told me, “We do it as we go along… we don’t have to ask anybody.”

We are fire-survivors out here who lost nearly half our community in the 2007 Harris Fire. We didn’t get the press Rancho Bernardo did. We didn’t get the federal assistance others did, even though we suffered the greatest concentration of homes destroyed by the Harris Fire. We are so very aware that when our primary access route is blocked we can't get out--- and emergency vehicles can't get in.

At times we deal with flooded dips and downed trees. But this company's actions were not an Act of God. The were the actions of a company looking to maximize its profit margin by cutting corners on safety.

Mr. Fletcher dismissively tells those trying to reach home or work to take an unmaintained dirt road as an alternate. The “alternate” he refers to is a single lane dirt road with precipitous dropoffs, gullies, and grades. Something to be avoided, not recommended, especially if you have no information on road conditions.

Certainly he did not risk driving it with his equipment.

When this same company hauled the first two units on Friday night, they knocked down power and phone lines and left one elderly couple without heat, water, or phone. It was finally a neighbor, NOT GJ Fletcher Co, who brought the couple a generator and kept it gassed up for the next 3 days. It wasn’t powerful enough to run the water pump, but it’s keeping their food from spoiling.

That’s the way neighbors do it in Deerhorn Valley. It’s common courtesy. Lessons are free.

Mr. Fletcher owes our community an apology, not an indictment. We are not intimidated by his boastful threats to take away our homes and properties… because we dared take a photograph of him-- and the damage he caused. Nor are we impressed by his crew that gave us one-fingered goodbyes after they dropped off their delivery and high-tailed it out of here.

Mr Fletcher: Have some class. Apologize. Then promise this will never happen again.

Business signs and oak trees both received the same disrespect.

This unit began its trip down Mother Grundy at 9:30 in the morning.
They completed the 2.5 miles in just under 6 hours.

You would have thought they could see this coming.

This is the next mud sump. Will Mr. Fletcher pay for towing?

YESTERDAY'S TRUCK/TRAILER FIASCO: UNACCEPTABLE (AND DANGEROUS)

The third section (approx 14x90) still at the bottom of Deerhorn Valley Rd. late Sunday afternoon.

Yesterday's truck-trailer fiasco was foolish, unnecessary, unacceptable, – and VERY serious. Look how easily our only access and evacuation routes to Upper Deerhorn and Mother Grundy were blocked. One stalled truck was all it took. Could have as easily been a downed tree or power pole during a wildfire. If you had needed medical or fire assistance during that time, would paramedics or firefighter be able to reach you? Not if you lived off of Deerhorn Valley Rd.
Thank you to all of you neighbors who took time to relay information. It started with a call from Ariele J about noon when Deerhorn Valley Rd. access was blocked. Later toward evening residents from Mother Grundy started sending emails and texts: Upper Mother Grundy was blocked, power lines had been knocked down to one home at least, leaving elderly residents without heat, water, phone. Neighbors continued to follow the trucks' progress down Mother Grundy ...to Via Pamela ...and on to Via Laura. Text messages, phone calls, Twitter tweets, Facebook postings, along with more email.
Hopefully the contractor will repair the damages done– and the next contrator will make sure road preparation is properly completed BEFORE the modules arrive. (The contractor responsible for yesterday's drama was GJ Fletcher Construction in Alpine.)

OVERSIZED TRACTOR/TRAILERS BLOCK DV RD. & MGTT

Oversized Truck-Trailers block access to Deerhorn Valley Road and Mother Grundy TT:

Two oversized tractor trailers were hauling sections a prefab up to Via Laura. Reportedly the hauler was Greg Fletcher from Japatul Road. About noon the first rig failed to make the turn from Honey Springs to Deerhorn Valley Rd, and traffic was told to go back down to Lower Mother Grundy in order to access DV Road.

About 6pm one of the rigs headed down Mother Grundy off DV Rd and got stuck, as well as taking down the power drop to at least one home. The elderly couple who lives there now have no power - water - phone. The rig moved on its way, and at least one resident went to investigate them as they were cutting down large oak branches to get through.

Evidently there was no proper road preparation done prior to hauling these sections. Residents along Mother Grundy report that the last prefab headed up there was required to smooth the road and clear obstacles well ahead of the transport day.

DEERHORN VALLEY DOG ATTACKS AND KILLS...

LATE UPDATE: A photograph of two dogs who match the description of the pair who killed the goat near Elena Lane is posted on the Deerhorn Valley website.

Near Elena Lane off Deerhorn Valley Rd. two large dogs attacked and killed a neighbor's goat this week. This was in broad daylight and in front of two witnesses out for a late-morning walk. They described them this way:
Dog One: black with longish hair;
Dog Two: short-haired, "blond" -face like a great dane/pitbull mix.

Later the same day a young sheep was killed by two dogs matching this description near Honey Springs Rd. and Barber Mountain Road (the dirt road that runs east from Honey Springs across Mt. Elena west to Barber Mtn).
Most vets and experts will agree that once dogs pack and kill for sport, they will continue to do so. If they have attacked a herd in the past, they will typically come back to finish off the rest.
When we first moved to Deerhorn years ago, the Peterson's had lost some livestock to a dog attack. Danny Lawson from up on Mother Grundy found that one of his dogs, a sweet airdale/poodle mix, was a part of the kill. Danny loved that dog, but immediately took him down to be euthanized. He told us, with tears in his eyes, that once a dog begins to kill for sport, he'll not stop; when a pack forms, kill instincts take over. Pets will usually feed very little on their prey, unlike feral dogs or coyotes.

Dog tracks are typically rounder and less symmetrical. Coyote tracks are identified by an "X" shape formed by the spaces between the pads.

COYOTE TRACKS: Usually narrower, and make a distinctive X (follow the space between toe 1-2 and toe 3-4 down around the bottom pad)

DOG TRACKS: Usually rounder, no X-pattern

KEEP YOUR DOGS CONFINED.... Most livestock owners will (legally) shoot attacking dogs on sight. Litigation will result in costly fines ($5,000 and up), court costs, and settlement to the owners for lost and damaged animals. If you have livestock, especially goats and sheep, check to see that their pens are secure. Dogs will both jump and tunnel under fences to get at prey.

Daniel and Sandra have been key members of the DeerhornCommunity since first arriving here more than a decade ago. Rob and I valued his company and his friendship, knowing he was a true neighbor who would drop anything to give you a hand. His last offer to us was to help with moving a 450lb woodstove out of the house! I guess for a guy who could land a 602 lb marlin, he thought that was a piece of cake. You never had to ask where you stood with Daniel... he would let you know, ready or not. Honesty and honor were his measures.

All flags in the SDFD district will fly at half-mast on Saturday, January 15, to honor Daniel's 35 years of service. The flag that will fly above Station 13, his last assignment, will be presented to Sandra at Saturday's services.

Rob and I, and the Deerhorn Valley Community extend our most sincere condolences to Sandra and all the Ignosci family. We send a special message to his four young grandsons: He did indeed love you all "to the top of the clouds."

Services will be held on Saturday, January 15, 11 AM at St. Pius X Church in Jamul.

5:30 AM and 28 degrees out. It dropped below freezing about 9 PM last night. That's a long time for all the plants that were starting to bloom just a couple of weeks ago. The mountain lilac (ceanothus) had already started putting out buds and tender growth. Our bees have been foraging on the rosemary blossoms.
Wouldn't it be great if the temperature zapped the Oak Borer? We've lost another big Coastal Live Oak to them, and have several others thinning out. Maybe the borer will move back to a warmer clime. Can't think of a better New Year's gift.

9:47 AM The CHP incident log reports the County closed Otay Lakes Road at Thousand Trails. Flooding was one-foot deep moving across the roadway. We watched cars head west onto OTL Rd from Hwy 94, and there were no "returns", but use caution. No reports on conditions at the Gliderport dip.

1:00 PM Sharon G sent this: I just returned from the Post Office and the dip on 94 has quite a bit of water going through it. It's passable, but watch for vehicles coming too fast from the opposite direction - the spray can go over your vehicle.

UPDATE: The CHP incident report at 11:27 states that a unit is on scene.

WEDNESDAY MORNING....

Took a drive down Deerhorn Valley Rd and Honey Springs about 8:30 am this morning. All was in surprisingly good shape. Water is crossing the road at the Deerhorn Dip, but both dips on Honey Springs are clear. I drove down the grade to Hwy 94. There were rocks, sand, and mud on the surface at the curves --- be careful and slow down to avoid skidding. At Hwy 94 I looked at the where the Jamul and Dulzura Creeks merge, and although there was a good amount of water flowing, it had not gone over the banks. Otay Lakes Rd. was open to judge by the numbers of cars turning, and no returns.

Here are some photos of our usual trouble spots this morning about 8:30 AM. More rain is coming throughout the day, but it looks like we can start drying out tomorrow.

BIG RAIN HEADING STRAIGHT FOR US IN ABOUT 30 MINUTES

Very large band of heavy rain making a beeline for South County from Mexico. ETA about 12:15.

SD County DPW reports Central Ave. in Bonita closed between Bonita Rd and Sweetwater with boulders falling down bank. This is the same rain band headed toward Deerhorn. Avoid roads if at all possible. Suggest taking Skyline TT to avoid the slide areas on upper Honey Springs. Those rocks above are going to be unstable.

Emergency vehicles are responding to an incident (unknown type) on Honey Springs Rd. If you have any details, please let us know: 468-6218. I'm monitoring Sheriff's radio but have picked up no details.

National Weather Service warns that runoff from burned areas and debris flows threaten our hills. The entire County is under Flash Flood Watch and Flood Warning until tomorrow, with the heaviest rains expected this evening into Wednesday morning.

FLASH FLOOD WATCH: Monday-Wednesday

Another heads-up for us from the National Weather Service...

...A Flash Flood Watch is in effect from noon today through Wednesday afternoon for all of San Diego County, including our deserts. …A large Pacific plume of moisture is expected to bring heavy rains and the potential for areas of serious flooding.

…Rainfall rates near or greater than one inch per hour are possible at times...especially in the mountains.

…Mud and debris flows area also possible...especially below steep terrain and areas with little to no vegetation.

…Runoff coming out of the mountains will fill and could overflow streams on the desert slopes of the mountains...thus the deserts are included in this flash flood watch.

…Strong thunderstorms could accompany a cold front on Wednesday. With the rainfall already received...this additional significant rainfall will continue the threat of mud and debris flows... Particularly in and around the recent burn areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions... A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.

The plume of moisture from the pacific will continue to bring moderate rain to Orange County and the Inland Empire...and light rain to San Diego County today. Strong upslope flow will result in large amounts of precipitation in the San Bernardino County Mountains.

Though rainfall will be fairly steady...hourly rainfall rates are not expected to be intense enough to cause flash flooding today. Shower activity is expected to decrease on Monday.

The moisture plume will be directly over Southern California Tuesday and Wednesday...so the entire region could have heavy rainfall with areas of urban or flash flooding then.

Dead Buck on Honey Springs... Heads-up

The plasterer got here about an hour ago and said there was a dead buck on the side of the road on Honey Springs --about a half mile up the road from the rest stop/parking. That's the second one I've heard of in a very short time. I'd hate to hit one of them on the way down, and it grieves me that we've lost two of them. -PD

Ed.Note: We are just beginning to see the post-fire return of larger wildlife. The coyotes are busy, and we had a daytime visit from a bobcat last week. We've seen several deer in the area. So I guess it's a heads-up to us all to keep our eyes open, especially on the fast roads like Honey Springs and Skyline. -KH

For the next two days (November 9-10, 2010) CAL FIRE will be burning brush piles on the Corte Madera Ranch South of Pine Valley. Smoke will be visible from throughout the Eastern portions of San Diego County. Weather permitting the burn will begin at approximately 10 am and completed by 2pm. This is an ongoing Vegetation Management Plan.

Today's issue of the Union Tribune is carrying this article on the front page of the Local Section (B). Funny how we take things for granted -like our Welcome Sign- until outside eyes bring a new perspective.
New neighbor, Francine Garrett, is looking for some donations from the SD Native Plant Society to help spruce up the slope behind. A little TLC would help, too. Paul Jacob replaced to left post that burned in the fire, and it looks like the Community Association will be providing a little extra love and care. WET WEATHER COMING: Cover the woodpile and plant the natives!

We have a few wet days coming. It's time to cover the woodpile if you want some dry logs and kindling. The National Weather Service says we may get as much as an inch or more of rain from late Tuesday through Thursday.

The San Diego Chapter of the Calif Native Plant Society (CNPS) had a big sale at Balboa Park last Saturday. There were several Deerhorn faces there, and a great selection of plants suited to our Chaparral and Oak Woodlands. If the rain really does come it's a great time to do some planting.

Here' s my haul: manzanita, ceanothus, several sages, Mexican flannelbush, wild grape and rose, bush poppy, penstemon, and monkey flower. C'mon rain!

SWAP MEET: DEERHORN STYLE

7am Saturday morning–– the guide balloons were flying, the flags were up, pickups, trailers, and cars turned into the the McKinley's driveway off Elena Lane--- site of the Old DV Lodge.
It was a good, old-fashioned Swap-Meet-Deerhorn-Style: furniture, tools, liniments, t-shirts, secret seasonings, handcrafted gifts: the basic "what-all's" of backcountry sheds and barns.
There was a serious discussion of swapping an electric people-mover for a mini 4WD Jeep-ette. Rob Deason lugged home a tank and regulators-- with a smile the size of Mother Grundy. Mark Payne almost ran out of BBQ, and Tom Lamb brought down the new state-of-the art chipper-shredder, weekwhackers, chainsaws, and cutters, all just purchased with our FireSafe Council USFS grant. A crowd gathered to admire this candy-store of super-tools.
The Community Association offered DV Antlers, Deerhorn Connected info, directory signups, reflective signs order forms, all neatly arranged and presided over with "g'mornin's, smiles and hello's.
Maybe the best part was just having the time to stop, and talk, and swap stories. Neighbors and friends and newcomers all enjoying a perfect day.
Big Thank-You's to Anne Evosevich and the coordinators, and to Rod and Pam McKinley for opening up their property for this event.

THE OWL

For me, our wonderful presentation on raptures hinted to publish a short story I wrote years ago which shows my reverence for owls. I placed it in the DV JOURNAL on our web page. I hope my own story being the first published in the Journal won't be mistaken as self-serving. I also have writings from Ariel, and a beautiful short poem from Jim Norton which I'll place. Rob

Raptors Up Close-- WOW!

It was standing room only at The Red Barn for the SkyHunters Presentation. Raptor Rehabilitator, Nancy Conney, brought four beautiful birds: an American kestrel (falcon), red-tailed hawk, screech owl, and a white-faced barn owl. As promised, the interactions were up close and personal. More than 80 moms, dads, kids, grandparents, neighbors, and friends brought their chairs, kids, and cameras. Really a day to remember!

TUESDAY UPDATE: Nancy Conney of SkyHunters called and asked me to pass her thanks on to everyone who attended the her program at the Red Barn. She was so appreciative of your generous donations, great questions, and the community spirit so in evidence. She was inspired by our turnout and the interest we all showed in raptors and their preservation. I know she doesn't want to wait another decade to return! And we don't either.

It was wonderful to see so many old and new faces. Our gratitude to Paul for entrusting us with his Red Barn for the venue.
